What is an Apostille ?

An apostille is a certification from the California Secretary of State’s office verifying the authenticity of a legal document’s notarization for use in another country. With this certification by apostille, a document is entitled to recognition in the country of intended use, and no certification by the embassy or consulate of the foreign country where the document is going to be used is required, pursuant to the 1961 Hague Convention.

Why do I need an Apostille?

If you go to a foreign country and need to show someone an official document (for example, a foreign university or government agency), they don't know whether your American document is legitimate. They will tell you that you need to get an apostille. What they really mean is that you have to get an apostille attached to your document. Once you've done that, they will accept your document as valid.

First we notarize your document. The Secretary of State's Sacramento office can authenticate a California notary public signature on a document without the notary publics signature being certified at the county level.

To avoid delays that may result from out-of-date documents, a document certified by a county official (e.g. county clerk) should have a certification date within the last five years or a new certified copy should be obtained from the appropriate county official.
We offer non-local, out of State and International Service.
